About Záhorie Protected Landscape Area

Záhorie Protected Landscape Area (PLA) spans approximately 275 square kilometers in the western part of Slovakia, along the border with the Czech Republic and Austria. It is characterized by flat plains, extensive pine and oak forests, sandy soils, and unique dune systems, shaped by the influence of the nearby Morava and Danube Rivers. The area hosts several important habitats such as xerothermic grasslands, wetlands, and riparian ecosystems. Historically, the Záhorie region has balanced human use with nature conservation; forests and floodplains have been sustainably managed since the 20th century. The area supports a range of wildlife including deer, wild boar, European pond turtles, and numerous bird species, some of which are rare or protected, like the black stork and saker falcon. Visitors to the Záhorie PLA can enjoy a network of marked trails for hiking and biking, nature watching hides, and educational nature paths focusing on local flora and fauna. The area is also popular for fishing and seasonal mushroom picking. Key landmarks include the Morava River floodplain, the Sand Dunes near Pajštún, and traditional villages offering cultural insights. The protected landscape appeals to outdoor enthusiasts seeking tranquil nature, accessible recreational routes, and opportunities to experience Slovakia’s western natural heritage. Its diverse terrain and habitats provide an attractive setting year-round, with winter offering cross-country skiing possibilities and summer supporting vibrant wildlife activity.
